“If your youth (or you for your youth) is looking for an adventure, wants to challenge her or himself with learning Spanish in an absolutely stunning location surrounded by deeply caring people, look no further. This program sets itself apart from other high school travel abroad programs because of the Foster family and the people who work hand in hand with them are truly a cut above; they don’t simply plan the programs, they live them with us with smiles, humor and SPANISH. I participated on a parallel program at the same time my daughter was on her program, so I witnessed the quality of everything from sun-up to sundown. I am an experienced traveler and have lead student programs abroad many times in my 30 year teaching career, so I very familiar with what travel programs entail. As parents considering international summer study programs, you can rest-assured that your student will have an experience of a lifetime and be very well taken care of. If you choose to opt for the family adventure, look no further either! I am eternally grateful for the Fosters, Lisa and the guides and teachers on site they work with. I personally cannot wait to regale my students with my Ecuadoran adventures!” – Suzanne Greenwalt

This trip exceeded all of my expectations! The 6-week combo with Common Ground not only boosted my confidence in Spanish but also helped me grow so much personally. The people I met during this trip became family. It was such a life-changing experience—I seriously can’t recommend it enough!

Carlie Young
I learned a lot and had a great time

In July 2025 I was a 3 week participant in the Adult Immersion program and it was an all around wonderful experience for me. My goals were to become more proficient in Spanish language and to experience the Costa Rican culture living with a family, volunteering/teaching children, and traveling on weekends to fun destinations! I accomplished that and so much more! I was matched according to my needs/desire with a family close to the Lapa Verde School. I enjoyed my advanced Spanish classes, mostly learning and discussing the history, geography, culture of CR, and optional dance and cooking classes. My volunteer activity doing crafts with children of the Guarani shantytown and teaching 2nd graders at the Colegio Bilingüe Yurrusti private school were meaningful and filled my heart with joy! I also loved learning about CR coffee, chocolate and animals being rehabilitated at Cafe Britta, Sibú Chocolate, and Toucan Rescue Ranch during the morning tours-tastings, however the highlights of my trip were the 3 well organized weekends traveling, exploring, learning and having fun at Manuel Antonio on the Pacific coast, La Fortuna-Arenal, and Tortuguero on the Caribbean coastline where I was able to travel the canals to see wildlife up close and personal, enjoyed the lovely setting and service at the Laguna Lodge, and witnessed a sea turtle lay her eggs in her nest on the beach! I highly recommend this trip where all details have been handled by CGI, and participants are able to relax and enjoy the best that Costa Rica has to offer!

The CGI Spanish Immersion Program is a fantastic way to improve your Spanish language skills while learning about another country (Costa Rica in my case) and opportunities to connect in a very genuine way with the people of the country. Additionally, the excursion opportunities allow one to see a wide sample of the country including both Pacific and Gulf coasts as well as the central volcanic region. The Spanish instruction (4 hours a day at a level highly customized to one’s abilities) is superb. The experience with the host families is very rich – I don’t know how you could do that with other kinds of tours. The service opportunity was very meaningful working with an organization with deep ties to a community in need. Also, the relationships you build with the leadership team and your fellow class mates is deep, inspiring and meaningful. The experience stands alone in my life.

Samuel Dickerson
This program was amazing. I started with almost no ability to speak Spanish, and progressed to being able to conduct basic conversations about my plans, experiences and opinions on things in Spanish. I met the most kind and wonderful people, both with the families that hosted us, the instructors at the schools we attended, and the group leadership with Common Ground. This program helps you to push you own limits in terms of language learning and in discovering and sharing in the cultures of the countries that host us. The experience is phenomenal.

Jaye Andrews
My wife and I recently returned home after spending an amazing two weeks in July 2025 participating in Common Ground’s program in Santo Domingo, Costa Rica. We feel incredibly fortunate to have discovered Common Ground’s website back in the summer of 2024 while searching for a Spanish language immersion program. Common Ground, founded over twenty years ago, is still personally run by its founders, Leslie and Rory Foster—a husband and wife team from Colorado who met while studying Spanish in graduate school. Their program is impressively professional, thoughtfully curated, and carefully organized. It combines language classes, community engagement, host family living, and meaningful service learning in a truly unique and impactful way. Participants come from a wide range of backgrounds and levels of Spanish proficiency (I would consider myself an advanced beginner), but what unites everyone is a shared passion for learning, a supportive attitude, and a genuine enthusiasm for connecting through language. The people this program attracts are not only committed learners, but also kind, encouraging, and engaging individuals. This is not a touristy or “bougie” experience. Santo Domingo—a working, middle-class town just a few miles from San José, the capital—is where the program is home-based, centered around a charming local Spanish school called Lapa Verde. The town feels safe and walkable, with local cafes, grocery stores, and restaurants frequented by residents, not tourists. It offers an authentic, everyday Costa Rican experience.

Andrea Andrews
This is a program crafted by teachers that provides very clear goals, objectives, and activities for someone seeking a valuable learning experience. Rory and Leslie’s commitment to a complete Spanish immersion experience is not only defined on their website, but it is intentionally, thoughtfully, and authentically practiced throughout your experience. Their mission of building bridges through language and community involvement is one felt every step of the way. The Common Ground team is full of talented and experienced teachers. But it is also full of people that whole-heartedly believe in a complete immersion experience and who are ready to guide, support, encourage, and motivate you along your journey. Through Common Ground’s detailed pre-departure classes, I felt ready and more importantly ,equipped with valuable information and insight that properly prepared me for this unique experience. Every detail of this program is carefully considered and planned; no stone is left unturned! My husband and I were welcomed with love and care by our host family; our Spanish classes were creatively designed to meet our needs, improve our conversation and listening skills, and to have fun; the community service activities gave us a great appreciation for the partnership that Common Ground has developed with the city of Santo Domingo for the bast two decades; and the excursions/activities were light and fun and full of laughs…and still all in Spanish! We came back home so grateful for this experience that delivered on all of its promises. You will have a rich, real, and truly gratifying time with the Common Ground Team!

Melanie Daybell
My immersion experience with Common Ground International was more than I could’ve hoped for. The steps they take to prepare you for your trip are so thorough, and they really have thought of everything needed to make this such a well-rounded experience. Not only did we immerse in the culture and the language, we were given the opportunity to serve and tour, as well. Living with the host family is such a rich part of the immersion experience and I just feel like Rory and Leslie have thought of everything to help you be successful in your language learning goals. This is my new tradition🥰

Diane Auten
This was a fun and eye-opening travel experience. I loved the Spanish classes, staying with my host family, and meeting like-minded travelers. Leslie and Rory are very welcoming, accommodating, and understanding. I felt very safe on this trip and would recommend it to anyone wanting to travel, learn, volunteer, and experience new things.

Carolyn Godfrey
I absolutely loved my experience in the CGI immersion program in Ecuador! The CGI team is incredible, and you learn so much about the culture. The focus is language acquisition, and this is the place to practice what you’ve learned. There are so many places to visit, and Cuenca was such a beautiful city full of wonderful people. I think I will always hold a little piece of Cuenca in my heart. So, if you want an immersion of a lifetime, travel with CGI and let your ability to speak Spanish shine!

Charles Cook
An outstanding and memorable experience!

SaTonya cox
This was a great program ! My experience from the teachers ,the host family ,and even the program leaders was fantastic! I felt safe , accepted and encouraged to push myself in a way that grew my language skills in the short time I was there! I even have the skills to continue studying on my own. I also made some friends as well. I’m grateful for this experience.

Edith Jones
I went to Costa Rica with CGI in February of 2025 for 2 weeks. I felt that I had hit a plateau in trying to learn Spanish and thought that an immersion program might get me moving again. I’m a low intermediate and I wanted to regain my enthusiasm to get to the next level. And I have! How? With Common Ground International! What an amazing program. I think the fact that it’s a family-run business is what makes the difference. Leslie and Rory have thought of everything, and they are genuinely so warm and caring. Their website gives all the information you could need; they cover EVERY aspect of the program. But I did have one minor question and when I emailed Rory, he answered within a day and even offered to speak with me on the phone. Their pre-departure course and Zoom sessions made preparing for the trip a breeze and I knew exactly what to expect. I was a little concerned about my age – 74 – but the group had a large age range and everybody felt welcome. Leslie and Rory had small activities at the start that helped break the ice and before you knew it a group of strangers felt like family. Our classes were in Lapa Verde Language School which is gorgeous and comfortable. It felt like a little oasis in the middle of Santo Domingo. They have classes of every level, and they placed me right where I needed to be to keep me challenged and level up. I think the most important part was then using the Spanish in the restaurants and the shops and with Costa Ricans that I met. I went on every excursion that was offered, and each one was a memorable experience – Sibu Chocolate, Poás Volcano, Rancho Arizona (coffee farm) and Parque Manuel Antonio. I plan to go back again in the winter of ’26 and I can hardly wait.

Risa Breckman
Every part of the program was thoughtfully crafted and joyfully brought to life, creating a truly immersive language and cultural experience. In just 3 weeks, my Spanish knowledge and speaking improved noticeably. The volunteer experience was meaningful and rewarding. The trips fun and interesting. And along the way, I made lifelong friends and came to love Costa Rica and its inspiring Pura Vida way of life. CGI not just met but far exceeded my expectations. I could not have asked for more from a program!

Teri Jo Fritsma
If you’re looking for a Costa Rican beach vacation, this program isn’t it. 😂 If you’re looking to learn Spanish and grow as a Spanish speaker and as a person, THIS PROGRAM IS IT! In the two weeks I spent in Costa Rica, I went from speaking labored, broken Spanish to being able to have relatively fluid conversations with native Spanish speakers. My (rather ill-defined) goal was to “think in Spanish,” and I got there! And since coming back, I’ve realized just how much I learned — I have more of the building blocks that I need in order to communicate fluidly in Spanish in all kinds of situations. The program was mind- and heart-changing, and for me, that didn’t happen without a few lessons in flexibility, humility, and empathy. It’s real. It’s challenging. Fortunately, Common Ground excels at being exceptionally professional and exceptionally personal at the same time. By “professional,” I mean that they give you all the tools, lessons, and information ahead of time to get you as prepared as you can possibly be for your experience. The amount of planning and preparing that goes into a trip like this is immense, and Common Ground covers every detail. By “personal,” I mean that Leslie, Rory, and Kelly were present in Costa Rica with us every moment of every day, helping us with logistics, concerns, language issues … absolutely anything that we needed. (How does a personal magically materialize the moment you have a question? That’s a superpower that the leaders of CGI seem to have that I still marvel at!)The school where you’ll study — Lapa Verde — is a beautiful, safe, green little oasis in the middle of the city. The director and the teachers are wonderful, personable, flexible, and every single one of them seems to go above and beyond in what they do. The host family stay, for me, was where I experienced the most growth, both personally and in terms of my Spanish. Imagine coming home at the end of a day of activities and classes, and speaking another couple of hours of Spanish with just a regular Spanish-speaking family! What a challenge, and what a gift!Another part of this program that I didn’t anticipate was the strong friendships I made with other program participants. We were all there for the same reason, and we leaned on each other for help and support. I expect and hope that I’ll be friends with some of my CGI peeps for life!I could not sing CGI’s praises loudly enough! If you decide to embark on this program, you will have the finest of preparation and be in the very best of hands. (Do it! 😊)

Pamela Maffei
I have participated in several immersion programs and CGI is one of the best. The thoughtfully structured program provides a unique experience of Spanish immersion combining family stays, connection to the local community and intensive Spanish classes. If you are an intermediate/advanced student, you will be placed in stimulating classes that raise your level of speaking. If you are a beginning student, you will receive the attention needed to launch your Spanish learning. I obviously enjoyed my stay in Costa Rica and look forward to enrolling again, maybe in Ecuador next time.

judy hoffman
If you are looking for a way to improve your spanish along with learning about the culture and supporting the community this program is the one for you!
Jude

Patricia Penta
Leslie and Rory are pros at managing all the details and quickly handling any issues that arose during the 2-week trip to Costa Rica. My teacher was excellent, patient, and helped me improve my Spanish conversational fluency. I felt safe and the home stay experience was invaluable for improving my language skills while learning about the rich Costa Rican culture. I liked the immersion trip so much that I will be signing up for the Ecuador trip next year.

Charles Sides
Don’t allow age to be a factor in determining whether or not you can participate in a language immersion program. If you have the desire to learn Spanish in an immersion setting, Ground International made it happen for me. I am 72-years old and felt that I had a place in both Cuenca and Santo Domingo. In the family groups of the program were some elementary age children as well as younger. The only thing that mattered during the program was the desire to learn Spanish, to encourage others and to be encouraged; the age of the learner was totally immaterial.

Richard Rayl
It matched and exceeded the stated goals. I have an improved understanding of the structure of Spanish, I do need to be using what I’ve gained. I was expecting more conversation. The grammar was helpful. Looking back I would have benefited by staying in class for two weeks.
If I were to do it again I would sign up for the three week program.

Jennie Sullivan
I very much enjoyed the excursions pre and post immersion. I enjoyed the comradery of the group. The group leaders were extremely organized and approachable. I enjoyed the immersion experience at the Spanish school in Cuenca. My teacher Victor was fun and interactive and my Spanish comprehension skills definitely improved. Cuenca is a lovely city and I felt safe.
The volunteer portion of this experience was impactful and an important part of the experience. The experience of going to and navigating the grocery store using Spanish to purchase items for preparation to serve homeless members in the community and then going to the mission to help serve the meal was a very meaningful experience.
Attending the program for a one week period definetly opened my eyes to the benefits of doing this type of experience for those who are seriously interested in improving their fluency skills.

Owen Landis
I really hope I can experience this again with you all!

John Gruidl
If you want to improve your Spanish and enjoy a rich cultural experience, this is the program for you. The program is well-organized with excellent leadership. On my 2024 trip to Ecuador, my fellow students were really interesting, fun, and supportive of each other. I was one of the oldsters on the trip but was welcomed. The home stays, classes, and excursions were all excellent and helped me to improve my Spanish. Ecuador was fascinating and we were able to experience so much of it. This program really has its act together!

Tamara Savage
Common Ground International (CGI) provided me an experience like no other. No detail was to small for them to address. In comparison, I ran my first marathon at age if 50. Unless you done one, you won’t understand how life changing it is. It makes you know you CAN do whatever you want to. It was that mentality that caused me (at the age of 70) to take a leap of faith, partially based on reviews like I’m doing to sign up for two weeks. If you invest the money please invest the time and energy that CGI provides you, to complete all assignments (required or optional) BEFORE you get there. I was well prepared, up to and including a impermeable (rain coat), and an introduction to the program, the community and optional additional trips. Go for it. You won’t regret it.

Isabel Lytton
I spent two weeks on the Ecuador trip and had an amazing experience. As someone younger (19) I was slightly nervous going in in regards to connecting with the rest of the group but I was so pleasantly surprised. Rory and Leslie were a great presence and always made me feel included. Everyone on the program was extremely kind and welcoming. On the Spanish side I believe that I have learned and practiced more on this trip than in my multiple years of high school and elementary schooling. The teachers were accommodating and went at a pace that was good for the class. I had a great time with all the planned activities and would definitely consider participating in another common ground trip!

Lucy G
Traveling with Leslie and Rory through CGI was one of my best travel experiences. It was super well organized and a perfect balance of class/learning time and exploring/adventuring! I feel that my Spanish language skills greatly improved throughout my 2 weeks in Ecuador. Our Spanish school had amazing teachers that created really personalized classes for small groups, and I felt that all the teachers took the time to learn about each of their students and met them at their Spanish learning level. My host family was amazing, they showed real patience and care during my Spanish learning journey and we have created a connection that will last a lifetime. I absolutely loved the city and people of Cuenca. It is a very calm and inviting city that I could see myself returning to for future trips and time abroad. Overall, I really loved the trip, its organization, and all the other participants and families that I met throughout. 2 weeks wasn’t long enough!

Susan M.
Traveling with Common Ground International on Spanish Immersion is a comprehensive program you won’t want to miss. The Fosters and the team(s) they have assembled are exceptional; this translates to an experience steeped in language, culture, education, community engagement, food, joy, and support throughout. The preparation begins with the pre-departure course (a valuable investment of your time) long before you begin traveling. You can opt into additional excursions which are a well-curated variety of interesting outings, presenting even more shared experiences to discuss in Spanish with your classmates! I traveled with CGI in Costa Rica for 2 weeks, Summer 2024. I wish I could have stayed longer. My listening and speaking abilities both improved and I found the entire experience invaluable. The towns and partner institutions are carefully selected by CGI to make this experience simultaneously rich and streamlined. I found the CGI team and its program to exude positivity and coach the same in the participants, which increases the success and learning of participants. The team is also very organized and their experience is demonstrated at every step.

Eugenia Gurevich
I have spent 2 weeks on the immersion trip for adults in Ecuador in June of 2024. I wanted to test my ability to speak Spanish in real setting, that is to find out whether I would be able to understand the natives in real life and able to communicate with them. The program was very well organized with classes in the morning and various activities in the afternoon. I like the classes a lot; they helped me to understand some fine points of the Spanish grammar that I had trouble with before. Living with a local family also provided ample opportunity to communicate in Spanish – and “my family” luckily did not speak any English – as well as added a cultural dimension to the experience. The program leaders Rory and Leslie did everything in their power to make the trip useful and enjoyable for all participants. Cuenca is a lovely city, and it was a joy to wander the streets. I only wish I could have gone to Costa Rica as well. Perhaps, next time.

Suzanne G.
If you are wondering if this is the trip for you, your family or your teen, rest-assured you will have an amazing experience in Ecuador! From start to finish Leslie, Rory and their son (and other leaders and teachers) are just the people you want to spend time with- they make you feel at home away from home. They are experienced, organized and thrilled to have you along. They are masters at leading groups after over 20 years of experience and you will not be disappointed. The Spanish language classes are fit for each person’s level, there are fun and varied side trips (I signed up for every extra trip and each one was worthy of doing). Cuenca is a beautiful city and safe to move around in and has warm and generous families who take you in.Teachers and students (my daughter accompanied me and did the High School Immersion Trip), if you need a boost in your Spanish and/or are curious about Ecuador, you will fall in love with this place. It’s beautiful, it’s diverse, and the people are lovely. I cannot wait for the new school year to begin so that I can share what I experienced and learned with my students. ¡Mil gracias, familia Foster, for this fabulous, life changing trip. It surpassed our expectations! Dust off your suitcase… !

Laura Whiting
This was an intense and fantastic program. I am a low intermediate, Spanish speaker, and it had been many years since I had done any formal Spanish learning. The program is very well run from start to finish. Leslie and Rory make you feel welcome and are attentive to each students needs. The quality of the teachers was exceptional. The optional excursions were well chosen. Living with a host, family truly added depth to the experience and made me feel like a member of the community. I met several people who are passionate about learning Spanish. I highly recommend this program!

Phil D
I spent a week with Common Ground Intl in Costa Rica. In short, it was a great experience. I am an intermediate Spanish speaker. I was looking for an immersion program where I could perform volunteer activities and improve my Spanish. This was the perfect trip for me. The program is very well run and the people are friendly and capable. This trip checked all of the boxes for me. I had the opportunity to improve my comfort level speaking Spanish and contribute to the community in Costa Rica.
If you are able to take two or more weeks, I would encourage it.

Bob Whitecotton
Choosing a Spanish language school is not a simple task and requires a fair amount of research because it involves a significant financial investment: airfare, tuition, adventure trips, and living expenses among others.1. The first consideration should center on the school itself. What are the teacher’s qualifications, typical class size, hours of instruction, the online reputation of the school, placement process, location – proximity to housing, individual vs. group classes, and many others of lesser importance?
2. What are the living accommodations options that are available is another vital criterion. Do they offer host families, apartments, hotel rooms, etc.? What are the arrangements for eating, getting around, and of course laundry, especially if you’re going to be there for more than a week?
3. What is the overall structure and is it flexible? We all have some concept of what we expect but expectations are not always reality. So, can it adapt to make an on-site reality better meet someone’s expectations quickly and without a lot of muss or fuss?
4. You’re going to be in a foreign country and everyone wants to see more than just a classroom. So what trips or adventures are offered both during the week and on weekends to provide a more immersive cultural experience?
5. Finally is it just a school or is it a program? If it is a program, how many years of experience do they have and what does the program encompass? Evaluating a school is a much simpler process.Having participated at another Costa Rican school prior to the pandemic, I used that experience to search for another option – a program. The 5 criteria above served as the initial basis for my research. However, more importantly, my research led me to select the Common Ground International (CGI) program, rather than just another school. I’ll spend this time describing my experience at CGI rather than my research findings.CGI is a program, by that I mean, it has been designed to provide a comprehensive language and cultural immersion experience across many daily elements. Yes, it incorporates an incredible school called Lapa Verde. The school has probably more than a dozen classrooms and many extensively qualified and devoted teachers. Most groups I witnessed, were small (4 or less) and able to address any level of student need – from absolute beginner to the most advanced Spanish speaker. My teacher had over 20 years of teaching experience and he was exemplary and engaging in every aspect- beyond my expectations. And yes, they also have an extensive array of host families intended to extend the language immersion experience beyond just 4 hours of school each weekday and of course, to provide a pleasant living setting once you leave the school. Host families for less knowledgeable students can speak some English; however, more advanced students live with families with little or no English language knowledge thus providing an environment to further enhance the learning experience in a day-to-day setting. My host family could only say “Yes.” Our daily conversations about family, friends food, and lives were a tremendously helpful learning situation. Since the host family provides two meals a day, you will learn Costa Rican cuisine. In my 4 weeks, I was never served the same dinner twice, greatly enhancing my culinary experience of Costa Rican cooking – I enjoyed each and every dinner.CGI has for some years involved the program in a local group called CEDCAS. CEDCAS works with immigrants (adults & children) who live in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Costa Rica. CGI’s program contains elements for medical personnel: doctors, nurses, EMTs, etc.; teachers including grade and high schools, Spanish and ESL teachers; high school students; and ordinary adults like myself. The medical personnel develop programs to educate CEDCAS adults, while the rest of us developed educational programs for the children from the barrio (neighborhood). It is a critical element of the CGI experience that is designed to enhance the language and cultural learning process. Moreover, it is an essential component of Rory’s and Leslie’s desire to give back to their Costa Rican friends and family. Every student participates in one of the programs to expand the learning process and as part of also giving back to the communityUnexpected stuff happens! When there are some 100 students across 6-weeks not everything will happen as the great planning attempts to anticipate; however, how and how quickly a program responds to correct such unanticipated events reflects on its maturity and leadership. Yes, everything didn’t go as planned but the CGI team responded with speed and alacrity to successfully address a few issues. Moreover, even the most casual suggestion was met with a serious effort to effect the suggestion – no matter how minor. Rory and Leslie want every student’s experience to exceed their expectation in every way. This maturity and leadership style has been developed over 20 years of running the CGI program in several Latin American countries. The CGI program also is designed to allow students to explore Costa Rica from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea; from surfing lessons to watching Greenback turtles lay their eggs, from visiting coffee farms and watching production and tasting fresh brewed to learning how chocolate is made, from hiking volcanoes to plunging down a zip line in a rain forest, from seeing rare reptiles to listening to howler monkeys in an verdant forest. They offer the full spectrum of whatever Costa Rican adventure you might desire all the while expanding your language and cultural knowledge. Is this program for everyone – clearly it is not? The program provides the broadest educational elements possible to enhance a student’s educational requirements from both language and cultural perspectives. It is both intensive and totally immersive – from morning until you go to bed at night. Clearly, not every interaction is in Spanish with students who have such a broad range of language knowledge; however, everyone attempted to speak Spanish whenever possible – we were all there to learn Spanish to the fullest extent possible. Rory and Leslie subscribe to that philosophy completely such that they use every minute to encourage speaking Spanish whenever possible – to great effect. If you truly want to experience language immersion that includes service projects to help local Costa Ricans, daily conversations with native Spanish speakers, learning from top-rated Spanish teachers, and adventures you might have never imagined, then CGI is the program for you. Learning a language is not easy but CGI makes the process fun, exciting, and enjoyable. If you just want to attend a language school for 3 hours a day, there are many other options and I would not suggest the CGI program. One final note, I attended this summer during the rainy season which was a concern. Throughout the month of July, I used my rain jacket once. Most rains occurred while we were in class, which might have been 5 times.

Want to improve your Spanish, experience life living with a Costa Rican family, have the opportunity to participate in amazing adventures, and meet and pass time with devoted amicable people? This is it! I have participated in three other amazing immersion programs, all were rewarding. CGI, however, raised the bar for me. The directors, Rory and Leslie, have amazing super powers for running a professional and personal immersion program. All the elements of CGI were five-star (the classes, the instructional staff, the supportive staff, the pre-trip communication (and during), the host family, the adventures, and the service with CEDCAS). From my first contact with Rory to nuestras despedidas, I felt genuinely cared for).
¿Consideraría volver a participar? ¡En un instante! ¡Gracias CGI por enriquecer nuestra vida! Pura vida!

One of the best experiences of my adult life. The program was well run and organized and exceeded my expectations on every level. The Foster family treated us like family, and no detail was missed. I will do another trip in the future and would recommend this to anyone with a desire for fun, adventure, knowledge and getting outside of your comfort zone. I can’t say enough about how wonderful this program is.

Lou Ionis
I thoroughly enjoyed the immersion experience that CGI created for me. It delivered on everything I was looking for –> cultural exposure, social interactions, helping the community and learning a ton of Spanish! They handled everything for me – I had no worries and always felt safe & secure.
I would 100% do it again.

Beautiful country and beautiful people. Great experience!

I went to Costa Rica with Common Ground and loved every minute! The program is accessible, and the Fosters are very accommodating. I highly recommend especially if you want to improve your Spanish!

I traveled with Common Ground International medical immersion program in July 2021. The trip was fantastic and I am so glad that I went. I was hesitant before the trip because of the hassle factor, expense and the fact that I had not traveled out of the US in at least 30…yes thirty years. I wanted to improve my Spanish and felt like I was at a point where using Spanish was the only way I was going to succeed. The details of the trip were well thought out and things went quite smoothly. At my age, 63, I wasn’t sure that living in someone else’s home was going to be comfortable but the host family was very welcoming and I felt very much at home. The language instruction was on point but the opportunity to use Spanish in my host families home and in every day life was even more valuable. I had a fantastic time and felt like my time and money were well invested.

Donde? Where to begin with my review—the great Pre-Immersion course that allowed me to be more than adequately prepared to travel alone to Costa Rica? Or, the Travel Spanish course that Rory and staff made available right when I needed it? Then there is the actual Lapa Verde Language School in Santo Domingo that is run by top notch educators with a passion for sharing their experience with students at every level of Spanish language base. They assess and then assign you right where you need to be—-for me, the very beginning. My instructor, Karen, was gracious, kind and firm. All necessary skills for dealing with pre-schoolers! Then, I could move on to my wonderful host “mama”. While we are in different generations, she was able to bridge the gap and make me feel welcome while also encouraging me to “stay in Spanish” in the evenings. Last but not least, by any means, the wonderful excursions, all while spending time with the extraordinary Foster family and other immersion students. To say it was the “trip of a lifetime” seems to fall short of the impact these past two weeks have made in me—booking my next trip(s) as soon as I finish posting this review!

Just returned from a 2-week immersion with Common Ground, in Costa Rica. The trip exceeded my expectations in so many ways! I felt well-prepared when I left home because the pre-departure information was very detailed. My Tico family was wonderful, and helped me practice over delicious, home-cooked breakfasts and dinners. From the language classes, to learning to cook gallo pinto, to the weekend trip to Manuel San Antonio National Park, the trip challenged me to keep up in Spanish, but never left me feeling overwhelmed. This is a first-rate program. Thank you Rory, Axa, my fellow students and everyone at LV!

I give Common Ground International Spanish Immersion in Costa Rica the highest recommendation. I went with my very nervous 13 and 15 year olds who had only had taken very limited classroom Spanish. Within 24 hours my kids were comfortable with the school and home. The family run business makes you feel like you are part of the family. The class room sessions were intense and long, but this program is to put your Spanish on a steep learning curve. The host family was warm, nurturing, and really contributed to our dramatic increase in our spoken language skills. The weekend excursions were fun filled, perfect for kids with short attention spans! I don’t know how the Fosters keep the pace! I guess the fact that they have similar aged kids gives them great perspective and drive to give these trips their all! In short, we really missed the program once we left and vacationed on our own. However, we were departed with the gift of increased Spanish fluency which we greatly enjoyed during our travels.

Penny Rucks
My husband and I participated in Common Ground International’s 4-week Spanish Immersion Program in Costa Rica the winter of 2019. Everything about that experience exceeded expectations, from the quality of pre-immersion material and availability of CGI staff to field questions before we left, to the expertise of our instructors in country, and the effectiveness of the classes. My speaking ability moved from almost nil to good-enough to engage with Spanish speakers at home – and read,! However it is the people we met during our volunteer experiences, our host family, and fellow students, that I will remember most.

Mike Rucks
Perfect experience. Four weeks in Costa Rica with a host family as a “general” student. The medical group was a real treat to meet, but did their own morning projects. Everyone together from 1-5 at Lapa Verde language class. I got 80 hours of instruction in 100% Spanish from Sandra as the only student. Amazing experience. Volunteer projects in the morning were challenging and highly rewarding. Weekend trips were a marvel of organized adventure led by Rory, aka Señor Látigo. Host family was a total treat. If you’re looking for a Spanish language and cultural experience, they’re waiting for you. Went with my wife. We’re 72 and all the younger medical students were really fun to be around. Even had a couple really interesting doctors. Quite a group.

Awesome 3 week Spanish immersion experience in Costa Rica through Common Ground International. I am glad that I chose to do my Spanish immersion in Costa Rica and stay with a host family. The leaders at Common Ground International were professional, welcoming and attentive. The Teachers were patient and encouraging. My goal was to obtain a better understanding of Spanish verbs so I can increase in my Spanish conversation level. Costa Rica offers endless opportunities to learn about their rich culture and history while learning the language all at the same time. The natives were friendly and warm and easily ready to assit you if you had any questions. It was also easy to get around and I also felt safe. My host mother was amazing and made my stay a pleasant one, she encouraged me to speak in Spanish and introduced me to many native dishes. She was a wonderful host and great cook. And I cannot forgot I met some awesome people and made a few good friendships along the way. Including my host family’s dog. I left Costa Rica with a better understanding of Spanish verbs, increased vocabulary and the ability to converse with more confidence.I recommend you try it.Pura Vida

I attended the immersion program for two weeks and stayed an extra weekend to go on an excursion at the end and it was awesome! The program is very well organized and you get the full experience of practicing Spanish the entire time you are there (classroom, volunteering, group excursions). I’m so impressed on how well the program was organized for every single group – and there were three different groups (maybe more) going from high school, medical-adult, and adult immersion. The program Directors (Leslie and Rory) were always available to answer and/or clarify any questions, help explain things, recommend best eating places, and just made the whole experience amazing! I definitely recommend this program to anyone who is interested in learning spanish – no mater what level you are at – it is good for all levels and they put you in classes tailored just for your learning ability so you succeed while you are there! I also highly recommend doing the excursion to La Fortuna and Tortuguero to see the turtles laying their eggs! 🙂

I had an amazing time with Common Ground for the Adults Immersion trip in Costa Rica. It was an amazing and unforgettable experience! I learned so much Spanish – going from very limited basic vocab to full sentences and basic conversations in 5 weeks. The program is incredibly well organized and a true immersive experience – volunteering in the morning, class in the afternoon, evenings with your host family, and free weekends to travel with the group or do your own thing. I highly recommend it!

My experience with Common Ground and their immersion program was very positive. Before I arrived I was a little nervous and also wondered if I could gain that much in two weeks. But the hosts, Leslie and Rory, understand well what immersion students go through and quickly helped me feel comfortable. The program is also very full and supports the students efforts to learn Spanish very well. I found that at the end of two weeks I had both picked up more Spanish and become much more comfortable speaking the language than I had hoped. In addition, everyone involved was both helpful and supportive and made for an engaging and happy learning environment. I am very happy that I went

I attended the immersion for adults for 2 weeks in June of 2016, and I couldn’t have been more satisfied with my experience. I wanted to gain confidence in using the little bit of Spanish I knew (from high school many years ago) in the non-medical hospital setting where I was about to begin work. The leadership of this program was so professional and yet so personally supportive, it made me feel safe to take risks with using my Spanish and exploring away from my English-speaking colleagues.
I just enrolled in a Spanish class at my local community college and I can’t believe how much more confident I am in knowing how to ask my questions and make comments about the classwork in Spanish—and this is just Spanish 1, second semester! I am planning to return to Costa Rica for another immersion program next summer because of how it stretched me so successfully and yet responded well to my fears and uncertainties along the way. Experiencing the culture and food firsthand through living with a family was definitely the best way to go. My host family and I are still maintaining contact via email.

The Common Ground International Spanish Immersion trip was a trip of a life time. It is well organized, but be ready to be busy. There is little down time! San Isidro de Heredia is a wonderful town. Big enough to explore, but small enough that it is not overwhelming. My host family was warm and welcoming and made the whole experience even better. I learned a lot everyday and felt I was able to use what I learned while I was in Costa Rica. ELEC school was also a great experience. The teachers were professional and well prepared and the teacher to student ratio allowed for individualized attention while also being able to learn from the fellow students. The school grounds and buildings are beautifully maintained and the view into San Jose is amazing. Saphire is a great leader and is also very open and helpful if you are having any issues or concerns. Overall I was extremely pleased with my Costa Rica immersion trip. I do wish there had been some more time to spend in town and get to know San Isidro de Heredia better and also use some Spanish in an every day setting outside of school and the home stay. However, my three week visit made me feel comfortable that I could go back to visit Costa Rica or another Spanish speaking country and know that I could make my way around and be understood.

Spanish Immersion Student Travel Program in Costa Rica

SUMMER & WINTER PROGRAMS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

The ratings & reviews for this high school student travel & Spanish immersion program for teens speak for themselves

Student Testimonials:

“I wish there were more programs to go on! Having been to Costa Rica last year and Ecuador this year, and loved both of my experiences, I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself next summer. Common Ground has been so great the past two years.” – Sarah Crosby Craig
“I absolutely loved this program. I did Costa Rica last year and came back this year for Ecuador and it did not disappoint me at all. Everyone is so open, caring, loving, helpful, and smart. I felt free to be myself and take advantage of every opportunity that I was given. We had a couple challenges on our trip like an unforeseen 11 hour bus ride, but we got through it together and honestly there is no other group I’d rather be stuck in a hotel or a bus with. I am so grateful to have been able to travel with common ground twice and would not choose anything else. I have improved my Spanish and my global knowledge, made friends I’d otherwise never have met, and become a better and more true version of myself and I can’t thank this program enough for all of that.” – Zoey Frank
“CGI was a W and a half, I loved the experience with all of my friends and the great and knowledgeable leaders they had. My Spanish improved tons during this trip” – Jonah S
“I really enjoyed this trip and I would recommend it to anyone looking to challenge themselves a little and step out of their comfort zone.” – Matthew Rabindra
“I participated in the 2 week Spanish Immersion trip in Ecuador, and it was truly one of the most unique experiences I have had. While I was initially under the impression that we would mainly focus on learning Spanish, I was very pleased with how we also learned extensively about Ecuadorian culture. For me, the backpacking portion of the trip was the most memorable experience of the trip, getting to see first hand the biodiversity of the cloud rainforest. In addition to the various new experiences, what made the trip just as enjoyable was the group I was with. Everyone was incredibly nice and were great people to share such an unforgettable experience with!” – Brady Conlin
“I really enjoyed my trip to Costa Rica on the High School Immersion trip with Common Ground International. From the beach to the host family to Orosi Valley, everything was a wonderful experience. I met other students who I will be sure to keep in touch with and loved spending time with the trip leaders doing all the adventures!” – G. Reis, Colorado

“My Costa Rican immersion experience was so wonderful. I want to go back and experience it all over again. It left me with much more confidence in speaking and understanding Spanish and most of all, it expanded my knowledge in a new culture with which I had not known before. From the living with a host family to the volunteer opportunities, the excursions, dance and cooking classes, and outdoor activities, I had a fantastic 2 weeks. If anyone were to ask me if I recommend CGI, I would definitely say “yes” with much confidence and enthusiasm.” –S. Baker, Texas
This trip to Costa Rica was everything that I hoped it would be. When searching for a program for Spanish immersion, I had a few main criterion that I was looking for. I didn’t think that any program could satisfy all my knit-picky stipulations, and when I saw that on Common Ground encompassed all of them, I was skeptical. However, the experience that I received was beyond what I had hoped for.
The number one thing that I wanted, of course, was a true immersion experience with a real host family. When we got to Costa Rica and I met my family for the first time I was ecstatic to find that every morning and night would be spent with them. I had expected this from an immersion program and was content, but I got a pleasant surprise to find how loving the families were. After those few awkward moments where none of us know exactly how to communicate, we grew to be a strange, awesome family unit, and I felt at home. And all of the other kids seemed so attached to their families as well. Even a student who had trouble adjusting the first couple days warmed up, and soon her and her host sister were inseparable! When I came back to America to see my friend who had gone on another group trip I was sad to hear that they barely got to know their families.
Spanish Immersion Host Family in Costa Rica
My next hope was that I wouldn’t feel inadequate in my Spanish skills. I was pleased to find that the kids came with all different levels, yet we all ended up on Common Ground (haha?). The trip was small enough that we all got to know each other well and that our coordinators could attend to our needs easily. If I ever needed help I found someone who was happy to assist me.
A girl who went to my school told me that she went on a trip and was disappointed because all they did for volunteering was painting, and she didn’t feel that the work was meaningful. I was worried that the same thing would happen to me. I was pleasantly surprised when we worked to help little kids with learning games and were helped by the older kids. Not only did we speak Spanish but we also felt that we made a difference. For all those looking to do four weeks (which I highly suggest; I could have gone even longer than that) the La Carpio trip and chocolate farm were also eye-opening and made me reflect about my life, which I think is an important (and maybe essential) part of traveling that will aide me in having an open outlook on the world.
And, of course, I was looking for a program that was fun. It is not to say that this trip did not challenge me or have some days where we worked very hard, but for the most part, my memories of this trip are of having fun. Every day was filled with new sights and activities, and I think that we maintained a good balance between work and play. I will never forget the beautiful sights of the waterfall as I careened through the canopy or of the amazing animals that we saw at the Toucan Rescue Ranch. And, of course, like every other student, I can never forget my familia tica (Costa Rican family). This trip has gained me many new experiences, skills, and friends, and I would highly suggest it for anyone who wants a life changing experience.
–S. Maronick, Colorado
“A month in Costa Rica was unlike any experience I’ve ever had before. The first day, using my rough Spanish, I accidentally asked my Tican mother for a baby instead of a drink. Several awkward moments, a few laughs and some more uneasy Spanish later, I had my drink and my family couldn’t stop laughing at my mistake, fully trusting me before they had gotten to know who I was. Even better, after that experience, I never made that mistake again, improving my Spanish every day. Talking went from a slow methodical process of verb conjugation and sentence structures to a steady flow that came as I talked. Pronunciation improved even though I barley seemed to notice it. Learning vocab went from a studious task to using a word over and over again in conversations with others around me.

However, not all of my time in Costa Rica was spent dabbling in Spanish. Going to one of Costa Rica’s most pristine beaches was a blast, even though a warm rain began to wash our towels into the sea. That moment was also when the special tense for verb commands finally clicked in my brain, as the beach life guard was commanding us to get out of the water, and I was frantically chasing after my other sandal. Nothing that I did during my time was just for fun, or just for Spanish, it was all intermixed. I finally remembered the word mojado (wet) after walking a mile in a giant down pour with a rain jacket that was made for light city showers and not the Costa Rican rainy season. Numbers became easy to say and understand after trying to buy ice cream every day from a bakery. When the trip was over and a sad cloud loomed over our departure, I still had my memories, my greatly improved Spanish, and over 2,000 pictures.

This year my Spanish class has become something I never worry about, (or study for) due to my time in Costa Rica, and just the other day another student told me that I am really the only one in the class who can actually speak Spanish, (other than the teacher and the kid who spends the summer in Panama every year.) My time in Costa Rica taught me more than any Spanish class I have ever taken did. I am now not only able to speak Spanish well, but confident in using it. It was an experience that I will never forget.” — R. Larsen, Colorado
“My experience in Costa Rica was amazing. Even before we left, I felt very welcomed by the group. All of the students bonded in the airport, and were pretty close before even landing in Costa Rica. I absolutely loved the Spanish School where we had our classes. It was so beautiful, and the teachers were amazing. Everyone was so nice and patient as we got use to speaking only in Spanish. My teacher took us on walks down the river, and to a house that had a zoo in the back yard to help us talk in Spanish; we also played games like Scrabble, which was so much fun, and so helpful. The family I stayed with was also extremely nice. If I ever had a question on my homework, my Mama Tica would help me out and explain it to me. My Papa Tico told me about the country and sports. Almost every night we watched a soccer game together. I only had one little brother who was 2 years old. I had so much fun playing with him.

In my Spanish class now, I have no problems understanding my teacher, who only speaks in Spanish, and am more confident when speaking in class. I still use the notes I took in Costa Rica on a daily basis. If I had the chance to go to Costa Rica again, I definitely would. It was an amazing experience!” –M. Kepler, Colorado
“The Common Ground International trip to Costa Rica was one of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences of my entire life. Full immersion is a great way to learn a language, and the trip improved my Spanish skills tremendously. We studied each weekday morning at the language school ELEC. The classes each contained only 3 or 4 students, which facilitated helpful interaction between each student and the teacher, and also among students. The host families were extremely friendly and hospitable. I really enjoyed talking with my family about Costa Rican current events and their perceptions of American culture.

The most fun element of the trip for me was the travel. We visited a surprising amount of Costa Rica, and I felt like I learned just as much about the culture while on the move as I did in San Isidro. The trip was even more fun because we had an awesome group of students and chaperones. I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to go on such a trip, and I made memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.” –B. Jackson, Colorado
“The immersion program for high school students was a life-changing experience for me!! Not only did I get to live in the home and befriend real Ticos, I got to learn about their daily routine, their food, their environment, their music and partake in all of it! In Costa Rica, school was something I looked forward to! My classes were the Perfect level for me, and I learned so much more than I thought I could in a few weeks. It is knowledge I have now taken to college with me. Our program directors (Rory, Leslie, and Percy) did an amazing job of designing a program of learning AND of fun!! The balance was quite perfect. Plus, they are the kindest people and really make the effort to get to know you. I knew if I would ever have a problem, they would be there for me without a doubt! I have endless memories of my Costa Rican experience and think of them often. I returned home with new friends (other students AND ticos), a new vocabulary, and a new outlook on life. Now, as Leslie once told me, I try to “sacar el jugo” or make the most of every opportunity in my life.” — C. Ficke, Nebraska
“My time in Costa Rica was awesome. I got to bungee jump off a bridge. I got to ride a horse, zip line through a jungle canopy. I saw a volcano erupt. I went to a coco farm. Along the way I learned to speak Spanish. So like I said, it was an awesome trip.” –P. Montine, Washington
“This summer, I had the opportunity to experience an amazing adventure. Traveling with Leslie and Rory Foster, Robin Kazmier, and 14 other high school students, I went to live and study Spanish in Costa Rica for 4 weeks. I stayed with a host family that spoke no English and attended language school with the other students. We traveled into the large cities to do volunteer work and on the weekends, made excursions across Costa Rica. I made great friends and saw some of the most beautiful and exciting places in Costa Rica. Living with a host family was difficult at first, but after the first week or so, living with them felt natural. Conversing with non-English speakers, both at my home stay and in language school greatly improved my Spanish and my confidence with using the language. Common Ground International ( the program I went through) was organized and fun. Leslie, Rory, and Robin were always around to help and answer questions and they worked hard to make sure we were comfortable and happy. Every activity we did with them, and with Percy Piedra, our guide, was entertaining and often exciting. We did everything from painting school murals to rappelling down waterfalls. I would recommend this program to any student without hesitation, so long as the student was willing to work hard, try new things, and have a great summer.” — K. Kitz, Idaho
A lot of new experiences for me that have made me into a better person! A lot of nature, too, so if you’re into that, this is good for you. I’m not really into nature stuff, but I still had a great time and the trip as a whole was just amazing!! I made a lot of new friends and saw stuff I might not have ever seen in my life if not for this trip. Couldn’t be happier I went. 10/10 would recommend.

The 2 week Costa Rica high school immersion trip was the best experience I could have ever had- the trip was the perfect balance of fun adventures and learning about culture and the Spanish language. I felt cared for, safe and supported the entire trip. The hotels we stayed at, meals, language school, host family experience, and excursions were all wonderful.

I participated on a 2 week immersion trip with my high school, Cardinal Gibbons. The experience common ground provided was life-changing; my eyes were opened to a new way of life – pura vida. From Manuel Antonio to Santo Domingo to La Fortuna, my experiences were unforgettable and I will cherish the lessons I learned forever. My interactions with my trip leaders, peers, and the Costa Rican locals were solely positive. Everyone was welcoming and engaging; they wanted to provide you with the best trip possible. My host family was extremely welcoming and made me feel as if I was apart of their family. They took me to the movies, the market, and to try local empanadas. I thought the trip contained a well balanced itinerary of excursions and education. Whether I was in spanish class or on an excursion, I was improving my spanish. Overall, I had the time of my life and if I had the opportunity to go on this trip again, I would!

I traveled on the 2 week program with CGI, and it was UNFORGETTABLE. Everything was taken care of and each day was planned to the minute so we were prepared each day with our clothes, materials for class or service, and money (we had a SUPER HELPFUL 5 page itinerary). The trip’s structure was perfect as well, with the middle week being the “grind” with Spanish classes and host families and the first and last couple of days being excursions and tourist-y activities.
– M.Pennisi, Texas
The program was really great. I really miss the friends that I made on the trip. They were the highlight. The worst part was having friends leave at the two-week mark. My advice would just be to go with the flow. Have fun. For crying out loud, it’s Costa Rica. Pura Vida!
– B. McClendon, Texas
The funnest 2 weeks of my life, where I learned so much and grew more wholesome as a person. Don’t be afraid of failure and live in the moment because you’re going to miss every second of the trip and want to do it again.
– L. Peeples, North Carolina
The 10 day Spanish Immersion Program with Common Ground International was an incredible experience for myself that gave me the opportunity to enhance my Spanish skills and have an experience of my lifetime. The program placed me in normal life situations to use my Spanish and pulled me out of my comfort zone to interact with my host family and local citizens. I would recommend this program to anyone who is ready for this type of experience and who has a fairly strong Spanish vocabulary and comprehension.
– J. Rohweder, Colorado
This trip was amazing . I would say almost the whole trip was a highlight! My favorite part was La Fortuna because it was super fun. It had fun activities which were zip-lining and hot-springs. Kamuk was Cool too. I really enjoyed connecting with the students. It was so much fun, and I learned so much Spanish.
– A. Laughlin, Pennsylvania
I just came back from the 2 week immersion trip with Common Ground. I had an amazing time and wish that I had decided to stay for for 3 weeks or 4 weeks. My host family was great, they were super nice and made sure that I was comfortable the entire time I was staying with them. I would love to see them again sometime. I improved on my Spanish, and I was inspired to become a better more fluent speaker. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone who wants to not only learn more Spanish, but also experience another culture. And make sure to sign up for the surfing class, it was really fun:)
– J. Elkins, North Carolina
This trip introduced students to a new country in a fun way, combining adventure with classroom learning. The trip was like a feast that started with appetizers of exciting beach-going and jungle-exploring, and this course was followed by the “meat and potatoes” of Tican home stay and language classes. The final dessert course was La Fortuna, with zip lines rides, waterfall visits, and hot spring pools at the base of an active volcano!
– V. Shillingsburg, North Carolina
I loved the program. It taught me a lot from being able to worry less about what was happening next to being able to get out of my comfort zone like when we went ziplining and going to the host families or even just holding a millipede. i hope that that was not the last time that i get to experience something like the trip. thank you so much making the trip so amazing!
– G. Studer-Randall, California
I went on the four week program in the summer of 2016. The experience was incredible, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Our group was extremely close, and we’ve all kept in touch since. Before the trip, listening was by far the weakest aspect of my Spanish. By the end of the trip, I could have full family conversations with my host family. I learned so much about Costa Rican culture, and it’s impossible to pick out a single aspect of the trip I loved most.
– A. Sheers, New York City
I participated in the 2 week full immersion program with CGI and I LOVED it. I met awesome people, both Costa Rican and American, and I had a really fun time in general. If you plan on going, I highly recommend going on the excursions and going for 4 weeks. The excursions were a blast as was the entire trip. I also learned a lot more Spanish in a safe and fun environment/classroom.
– P. Grady, Colorado
You will learn a lot, be open and patient! It was a trip I will always remember. If you are positive and open it will be a blast!
– L. Lewis, Alaska
My Spanish skills majorly improved, but I also gained new friends (from all over the world) and tons of memories from the various experiences I had on the trip. I got a lot more out of the trip than I ever could have expected and it was amazing!
– J. Barnes, Iowa
Overall this trip was amazing. It was so much more than just a Spanish immersion trip, and I gained so much from it.
– B. Radek, Colorado
I definitely went through a lot of ups and downs on this trip, but overall it was such an amazing experience that I don’t want to go home. I feel like a have a completely new sense of not only Costa Rican culture, but my own culture as well. Bonding with my host family and so many people on this trip really got me out of my comfort zone, and I think anyone who is up for an adventure and wants to try something new should do it!
– M. Metz, Illinois
This is the best way to learn Spanish! One of the most special experiences in my lifetime.
– S. Martin, California
This trip was an experience that I will never forget, and think it is unique as far as these programs go. It expertly blended host family/school with adventure/exploration. Now that it’s over, I’m just going around to everyone telling them how awesome it was.
– H. Livingston, Colorado
I think this helped me beyond belief, while it was hard, everything was a new experience and was so fun. Learning about a new culture is so eye opening, but also, my spanish has improved drasticly and I can communicate much better with my grandpa. It was so worth it and a life changing experience.
–S. Copper, Colorado
This trip was an amazing experience. It teaches you so much about yourself and how you are able to adapt to a different culture, your spanish improves enormously and the way your look at your lifestyle when you get home, completely changes for the better.
–A. Barry, California
I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Costa Rica. Going on that trip was truly a once in a lifetime experience! It is much easier to form Spanish sentences and understand the language now than before I went. It was great to see the culture of another country as well.
–M. Brandt, Colorado
I got to do things that I never thought I would have a chance too and my Spanish improved greatly! This was definitely a trip of a lifetime!
–A. Larsen, Nebraska
Costa Rica for me defined what I need to be achieving in IB. I achieved international mindedness because I had to interact with people from a completely different culture and even speak a different language. It also tied in quite nicely with the CAS program because I achieved creativity, action, and service from my trip to Costa Rica. I was creative in that I had to figure out how to interact with different people and speak with them; if I didn’t know how to say a phrase or word I would have to figure out how to somehow still get my point across. I also had to be creative by learning new things about the Costa Rican culture. For action, we did many hikes, we zip lined, and we swam. For service, we helped out a few Costa Rican schools by presenting science projects and also donating school supplies. I feel like I learned a lot on my trip…not just about the Spanish language but also about how to interact with people that are different from me.

Parent Testimonials:

“My daughter did the two week Costa Rica trip and we were so impressed with how thoughtful every part of the trip was for the students. The first few days of activities for the students to connect as a group was invaluable for my daughter heading into host home experience. I also appreciated the daily updates and photos, which really gave parents a sense of the what was happening during each day of the trip. There were a lot of growing opportunities for my daughter, but the program provided the right amount of support and connection. I am looking forward to see how the immersion piece will enhance her Spanish class this year.” – Nicole Collins
“When our 17 year-old son decided to do a Spanish Immersion trip during the Summer before his senior year, it did not take much research to see that Common Ground is the stand-out program in the space. With their small group size, special focus on teens and sheer years of experience guiding trips to communities where they are well-networked, it immediately looked like a great fit. The info session with Leslie and the Common Ground team sealed the deal – we could tell that our son would be in great hands with these adult leaders and with a cohort of peers who were looking for the same thing – to stretch outside of their comfort zone, gain Spanish language skills, contribute to the local community and have fun exploring Costa Rica . While our son had never been away on a trip like this before and was a bit nervous, especially about staying with a host family, he surpassed his own expectations and thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the program. The host family stay ended up being a real highlight for him and he came home with a noticeable boost in his Spanish skills and self confidence. We can’t recommend the Common Ground program and team highly enough!” – Stephanie Garcia
“Common Ground is a class act! Our daughter did the Ecuador/Costa Rica combo program and was away for over 5 weeks! She loved Ecuador for the culture, her host family & incredible site seeing experiences & she loved Costa rica for all the fun kids she met! She was immersed in both of her families, had amazing spanish classes and worked with immigrant children for her volunteering which she LOVED! The Foster’s took such amazing care of my 16 year old daughter, communicated a TON and gave her experiences of a lifetime. I searched and searched for the right company and I’m incredibly grateful they are who we chose!” – Christina Garni
“We really hoped our son would gain confidence in speaking Spanish. He plans to continue progressing in his high school courses but we feel there is no better way to learn than a practical hands-on immersive experience. After researching several programs I felt Common Ground would be a good fit with his other interests in travel, adventure activities, soccer, and volunteering. I thought it sounded like a perfect combination of educational experiences and a really fun time. It seemed like a small group environment would foster deeper personal connection and more intense learning in a classroom. I was so impressed by the pre-departure zoom meetings to prepare the parents and students that I was very confident my son would be in good hands during his 3 weeks in Costa Rica. I was blown away by the communication during the trip when we got daily updates and photos from the counselors to see that the kids were incorporating classroom learning into the real world. I loved hearing about the variety of activities like cooking class, trips to the market, traditional woodwork, coffee plantation, animal rescue center, surfing, ziplining, etc etc. The list goes on and on! Keeping teens engaged is hard and the activities that were planned seemed like an excellent way to learn about the culture and give a greater appreciation for life in Costa Rica. We would highly recommend this program for students who are ready to get out of their comfort zone, willing to try new things and meet new people, and interested in advancing their Spanish skills. We really hope our 2 younger sons take Spanish so they can also have this same experience in the future.” – Ly-Lan McCarthy
“I was so pleased with this program, from initial information, to pre-trip organization to daily communications while my daughter was in Costa Rica. I know she had the experience of a lifetime and felt good about her Spanish and enjoyed interacting with participants and her host family. The weekend trips made it an over the top positive adventure for her.” – Maura Anderson
“This trip exceeded my expectations – the level of communication, pictures and care for my child as if he was your family put me at ease. My son had a wonderful time and said the people were amazing, the sights were beautiful and he came back wanting to learn and explore more across the globe. Thank you for this gift you gave him!” – Kristen Linehan
“My daughter attended the 2 week Ecuador trip in June 2024. She already misses her compadres! The trip leaders were caring, positive and supportive. The backpacking portion was my daughter’s favorite. She especially enjoyed being in an interdependant community of teenagers without phones! She loved the adventure of hiking in the Amazon and also said it was joyful to wake up in the morning (after sleeping in a hammock outside) and just find people to hang out with and enjoy conversation.” – Rachel Turiel
“I am thrilled that my high school-aged son participated in the CGI Ecuador program! Not only did he further develop his Spanish skills, but he took major steps toward adulthood at the same time! This was his first time away from home and he learned to navigate a new city via public transportation and taxi, how to plan his day, shop in Spanish, problem-solve when things didn’t go as expected, and develop relationships with both Spanish and English-speaking friends. My son was shepherded through this program by the talented, organized, and outgoing CGI Staff (especially, Leslie, Rory, and Lisa–the high school leader). I would recommend this program to any student who is curious, flexible, and open to adventure.” – Bronwyn J.
“Our 8th grade son spent 9 days in Costa Rica and had one of the best experiences of his life! Every detail was considered from fun and adventure to learning and cultural opportunities. It could not have been planned, organized or executed better. My son felt safe, supported while also offering him opportunities for growth and independence. Thank you for offering this fantastic program, it was life changing for Miller and I highly recommend it to anyone considering!” – Tyler Cunningham
“CGI high school Spanish immersion program seemed too good to be true however, it exceeded expectations. It was a safe, impressively well organized, culturally enriching, fun and a truly Spanish immersive experience for my 14 year-old daughter. I felt extra comfort knowing the owners, along with their efficient staff, were present and involved during the program. My daughter felt at home with her host family. She was well-fed and cared-for by them. The host mom prepared delicious meals for breakfast and dinner that included fruit, meat, vegetables, and rice. The host mom washed and folded my daughter’s laundry every other day and straightened up her room. I couldn’t ask for more. Thank you!” – Angela Cohen
“What an incredible program!!!! The communication from the organizers was incredible and the trip was planned so well! My son was very nervous to go as he is a beginning Spanish speaker, but he had a wonderful experience and grew so much as a person. I’m so grateful to Leslie and the entire Common Ground team – they were amazing!” – Christine LaBerge
“My daughter attended the 4 week trip in CR last summer and the 2 week trip to Ecuador this summer. Both were incredible- and very different experiences. I felt comfortable sending my daughter because of the caring, attentive directors who provide great trip preparation and communication throughout the trip. The opportunity to be immersed in a group of teens away from social media and in a new culture has once again been a breath of fresh air. The Ecuador trip had a great mix of culture, language, sightseeing, hiking adventure and biology. My only complaint is that there is not another trip to send her on next summer. Finding Common Ground International has truly been life changing for my daughter and I could not be happier with her experience. I recommend HIGHLY” – Laura Levine
“What a terrific program! I love that Common Ground International is run by a family and treats their students like family. I appreciated the almost-daily emails from Leslie and personal contacts throughout the trip. This is a tremendous opportunity for your child! Because the number of participants is limited, your child gets to experience a personalized approach to studying and exploring. I highly recommend this program!” – T. Michel, California
High school Spanish Immersion in Costa Rica
“This is an excellent opportunity for kids to practice and learn Spanish in a safe environment that still challenges them to grow socially and academically. I think it is an optimum combination of coursework, language practice and travel that leans heavily toward academics. I would have had no patience with travel alone in a Spanish speaking country. Incorporation of the volunteer activities is an excellent approach for giving students the opportunity to practice their Spanish while giving back to the community and experiencing another aspect of the culture.” – C. Pugh, Ohio
“This is a well run program including living with a host family, adventure travel, classroom Spanish, volunteering at a local school. Your child will experience real immersion in another culture. My daughter loved the program. She made friends, loved the school kids she worked with, enjoyed her host family and loved Costa Rica. The Chocolate Farm was her favorite part!” — T. Metz, Illinois

“My son had a wonderful time, he loved every moments of his trip. He really enjoyed his family, the excursions, working with the local school. He wanted to stay for the additional 2 weeks.” – V. Ganivet, Colorado
“This was a great first experience traveling abroad with Spanish immersion. It was a great mix of traveling, adventure, instruction, host family, volunteering in the community – all the essential components of a great traveling/language experience!” – D. Livingston, Colorado
“If you are a parent who feels apprehensive about sending your child to a foreign country for a language and a cultural immersion program, I highly recommended CGI. The experience as a whole, from the professionalism of the staff and the warmth of the host families, was outstanding. My daughter had an unforgettable experience enhancing her Spanish skills while being immersed in a new culture.” — A. Baker, Texas
“My sixteen year old daughter loved this trip! It was very well organized, gave her an opportunity to be immersed in the Costa Rican culture and was so much fun.
Her only regret was that she did not stay for the four week program.” –N. Gershman, Colorado

“CGI provided a really solid immersion experience to my daughter. The excursions were wonderful, very fun and educational at the same time; the family pairing was done with great care and they will became a part of your kids life (my daughter always speaks about her Mama Tica, Papa Tico and her brothers and sisters :). The language learning experience made her improve very significantly as she took confidence to use what she learned in the classroom but had not had the chance to use in such an immersion program.” –C. Barry, California
“Sending your child off to a foreign country, to live with strangers for a month is a scary concept.  I had reservations about over site, the families, the learning experience etc.  I read the  “testimonials”, just like you are reading now and thought … “Am I  I really signing up for this?”  I called and received many reassuring emails from former families, I attended the family orientation, but nothing won me over like the first set of photos’ Leslie send back.  A picture is a thousand words; the ear to ear smiles, the camaraderie among the students, and the joy in the eyes of the host family.  My son Jordan grew, matured and now has a passion for other cultures.  He has no fear of speaking Spanish, even though his is not perfect.  He appreciated differences in Latin vs. American community life.  He had fabulous weekend excursions.  The most amazing point for me was hearing Jordan’s translation of an interview he conducted in Spanish with a Costa Rican businessman.  The nuisances and detail he gleaned from this gentleman were profound, and the conversation was ALL in Spanish.  Rory and Leslie have hand-picked the families, oversight is monitored carefully and the town is small and safe enough the students really get a chance to feel like they “live” in the town.  We were so impressed with the trip our younger son will be going after his sophomore year.” –N. Krywonis, MD, Colorado

“Our 15-year-old daughter participated in the four-week immersion program in Costa Rica with Common Ground and it is frankly the best thing she’s ever done. Because we are from the East Coast, our daughter flew down to San Jose on her own and was met by one of the Common Ground staff members. The program is really well structured, no doubt a product of the years of experience the Fosters have. There were fun and creative ways to get the students really involved in the community in an engaged and independent way. For example the scavenger hunt that they used to acclimate everyone to the town, and the community service at nearby schools. The location for the program is excellent– big enough to be interesting, small enough to be safe and friendly. We would highly recommend all the supplemental trips. Our daughter came back a changed person. Not only was her Spanish leaps and bounds ahead, but she cooks meals for us (Tico meals, of course) and is not afraid to manage things on her own. We really have enjoyed seeing the confidence and independence she gained from completing the program. The students all seemed to be respectful and dedicated and this was very important to us. I highly recommend this program.” –R. Harris, Virginia
“Lindsey had a wonderful time and learned a great deal about other people, their culture and language. Her improvement in Spanish was well worth the expense and time spent. She had some homesickness attacks, but looking back on it she found a new level of maturity. Things you’re probably interested in are: before her trip her motivation for studying Spanish was just to pass tests in class; now she wants to learn the language. Also her ability to learn new words and more complex sentences is much easier, whereas before it required tedious hours of study with cue cards. She also made new friends with her trip mates that she keeps in contact with. One notably is her host family’s daughter that she keeps in contact by e-mail.” –R. Berger, Colorado

Spanish Immersion Costa Rica Volunteer work
“Our 17-year-old son traveled to Costa Rica with Common Ground International (CGI) for two weeks in June 2011, during the summer between his junior and senior years of the Lakewood High School IB program. He learned about CGI from a friend who had signed up to go to Costa Rica with CGI in hopes of improving her Spanish skills through a language immersion trip. From our initial meeting with Rory Foster, throughout the planning phase, through the two travel-weeks, and the post-trip follow up, CGI consistently performed with top-notch professionalism. As parents, we especially appreciated the email updates from the chaperones every few days during the trip and the photos they posted online. These periodic updates gave us great confidence that our son was well supervised, safe and thriving, even when he elected not to contact us directly in his effort to make the most of his growing sense of independence through foreign travel without parental interaction (or, in his view, parental interference).

The extraordinary value our son gained from this CGI trip was best captured by his first comment to us upon returning to DIA: “That was about the best experience of my entire life.” Though he is not prone to hyperbole, and despite landing in the wee hours of the morning after a full travel day, our usually stoic son spent the next 2 hours regaling us non-stop with stories of his wonderful adventures with his host family, in his daily Spanish classes, through community service projects in San Isidro, and on weekend excursions with the CGI group. Every element of the program resonated with him and added to the overall tremendous personal benefits resulting from the trip. In addition to returning with heightened senses of independence and confidence (great skills to develop in preparation for college), our son came back with an expanded view of global interconnections, a big boost in his Spanish verbal skills, and new friendships. He currently maintains an “A” in 12th grade IB Spanish and recently earned a high score on the Spanish SAT subject test – both academic successes traceable in significant part to his fun summer experience with CGI.” — S. Naylor, Colorado
“Thank you for providing this invaluable experience for our daughter. She has grown leaps and bounds in her self confidence and in her Spanish skills. Mariah returned to school this fall with a more positive attitude about her Spanish class and the upcoming IB examinations. She feels the immersion trip solidified and strengthened her Spanish language skills in ways that school could not do. Her Spanish grades are better than before the trip as well!” — L. Kepler, Colorado
Rainbows on Spanish Immersion in Costa Rica
“I just wanted to let you know our perspective on our son’s Costa Rican Immersion experience. After more than a month at home, he still frequently talks about his adventure in Costa Rica. He still communicates with his Tican family through e-mail and facebook. And now after a week back in school, he is really surprised at how easy it is to speak Spanish in class and he is always trying to get a turn (they must raise hands and be called on) to talk. This experience wa so special for him and thought he enjoyed everything and everyone, La Iguana is talked about regularly.

When we first saw Common Ground’s presentation of the program at school, my thought was, “That would be great for him in a year or so, but I think four weeks would be better than a two week experience.” His thought was “I want to go NOW!” After much negotiation, the deal was struck. Though he did experience a bit of a letdown when the two-weekers left (because he was going to miss all the other kids), he also admitted that it was a bit of a turning point for him in his Spanish. Those last two weeks really helped cement a confidence in his speaking that is still with him. And of course, he got to go work at the chocolate farm.

We also want to thank Common Ground for all the timely communication and posting of photos. Though we only ever spoke with our son twice in the four weeks, we were completely in the loop. We would definitely recommend this program to other students and their parents.” –L. Larsen, Colorado
“My daughter had an incredible experience with Common Ground. She loved all the adventure stuff, including the bungee jumping, and she really enjoyed the time with her “family”. Her Spanish definitely improved, and most importantly, she feels very comfortable using it. She also seems more grown up, which I think travel does for you. I can’t think of any way for you to improve the program for the parents. We felt very comfortable sending her off with you. And definitely, use us as references. We will be enthusiastic supporters!” — D. English, Colorado

“Our daughter had a fantastic time. It was a very good experience for her and for us as parents. This is reinforced by the fact that our younger daughter will more than likely go next summer for a 3 week session with Common Ground Intl. She liked her host family, the new friends that she made, the excursions, the community service and the classroom. She really spoke positively about every aspect of the trip. As a parent I am used to my kids going to camp and being away. We have even had her in several other countries. We felt very secure in her being with you in Costa Rica. You have a very nice company that creates a great experience for all involved. Please feel free to use this note as a testimonial to any parent considering Common Ground Intl. Thank you very much” — K. Gordman, Nebraska
“We felt the Costa Rica experience for our daughter was all and more than we expected. She absolutely loved everything about it. It was hard as a parent sending her off but I felt you did an excellent job of keeping us posted. She often talks about missing you guys and the people she met and stayed with in Costa Rica. I really feel that she grew from the experience.” — J. Larsen, Nebraska
Educators Day Camp Spanish Immersion in Costa Rica
“The experience was an extremely positive one for our children and I am an enthusiastic advocate for the program. Both my daughter (Denver School of the Arts grad, 2007) and son (George Washington HS senior this year) made the trip in the summer of 2008. Both still speak often of their experiences with great fondness, and my daughter is convinced she would like to move to CR after college. Both have remained in contact with Rory and Leslie, corresponding in e-mail and Facebook. Although there are lots of great reasons to travel to Costa Rica, increased fluency from Spanish immersion was the outcome my wife and I were most looking for. Our daughter, in particular, gained confidence in her Spanish speaking skills during and following the trip. Both kids loved their host families-the characteristic warmth and affection that one associates with Latin American culture is evident in the many photographs and stories that came back. Likewise, the school visits and interactions with other children were purposeful and well-organized for the benefit of all participants. Maybe I should not have been surprised, but the volunteer service aspects of the trip made as great an impression with our kids as the more tourist-y aspects of the trip. The excursions must have been breathtaking–black sand beaches, volcanoes, waterfalls, jungle canopy zip lines. The best part is that the Fosters are Costa Rica veterans and have long-established, reliable and trustworthy contacts there to facilitate travel. Our daughter remarked she always felt safe and comfortable while traveling–the driver inspired trust and drove safely. Overall, it was a great experience for our children, and I am grateful to have been able to fund the opportunity for them.” — P. Leece, Colorado
“I am writing to recommend to you (for future reference, and other IB students) the Common Ground International Costa Rica “immersion” program for high school students. We heard about this program in an LHS IBPA newsletter a couple years ago and decided to send our oldest, (an IB senior this year), on the program. The program gives the students an opportunity to study Spanish, live with a Costa Rican “host family,” perform service work within the local elementary schools, and tour the natural highlights of Costa Rica (the rainforest, national park, volcano area, etc.) Nicholas was within a small group, including three students from Colorado Springs, a student from East High, and a physician’s assistant in training. The group leaders included Leslie Foster, co-owner of Common Ground, and an IB Spanish Teacher from CO Springs. Nicholas really enjoyed the experience and, per the group leaders, really improved his “speaking” Spanish over the course of the 15-day trip. We felt that for all he gained, the cost of the trip was a very good value, and we would recommend this to other IB students interested in improving their Spanish skills and learning more about this colorful country.” — A. “Our family researched multiple language immersion programs abroad, and we are happy that our daughter participated in the Common Ground International summer program. Leslie and Rory Foster’s enthusiasm and professionalism are evident in every detail. Communication about the program’s structure, goals, schedule, and safety were superb. We had ample opportunity to ask questions and always received timely responses. When it was time for our daughter to leave for the summer, we felt very confident putting her on the plane! Rory kept us updated throughout the four-week program about what the students were doing and how they were coping. When we spoke or emailed with our daughter, she spoke very highly about Rory, Leslie, and Robin and her fellow students. The Common Ground experience exceeded our expectations, we appreciate the opportunity Leslie and Rory have created for students, and we love listening to our daughter’s Spanish!” –S. Bender-Kitz, Idaho
“Common Ground is the type of summer experience that all high school parents should consider for their teenager. The program provides students with the opportunity to adventure in a beautiful, foreign country while finding a great balance between education and summer fun. The Program offers a wide variety of interesting and exciting experiences from rappelling down a waterfall to visiting a coffee farm to snorkeling with tropical fish to living on a cocoa farm. The Program is extremely well organized; its leaders care deeply that the students have a valuable and memorable experience; and for our daughter, they fully achieved those objectives.”  — P Gordon, Colorado
